Here are a few issues to discuss about the ending of “A Sound of Thunder”:

• What do you think this new world (post butterfly stomp) is like?
• What could a butterfly symbolize and why would that change the world?
• What do you think happens at the end of the story and why? If someone does die, who do you think dies?
• In your opinion, why does Ray Bradbury not explicitly say what happens?
• Update: Is it possible that Eckles wasn’t the one that was shot? And why?
• One more update (based on Angelica’s and Kevin’s comments): I personally like the idea that Travis shot himself. What would be worse punishment for Eckles? Being killed? Or being forced to live and know that he messed up the world?

Goals:

• To help each student grow in his/her understanding of the class material
